Chapter 11

The Recognition of Love through Music

Once more he goes; but just to gaze,
Upon the wheel of life;
Where once he refused to be a cog
That he might know real life.

Next morning, as they sat at breakfast in a general conversation, the father asked his son if he wanted to go to his office with him.

"Why, yes, I want to," so they set out for their daily routine in the wheel of industry. The father in his natural state and the boy with an anticipation of having once more a glimpse of life's struggle to live. His life was taken care of financially, he felt assured, so he could look from the standpoint of an observer of the Human Machine.

They arrive at the office where he left six months ago. He went the rounds of the office and spoke to each one of his father's employees. Some had struggled with the firm for years; yet they sat in the same chair, went over the same figures on the same paper, seemingly; and they seemed to be satisfied with life. How little did they know! How limitless the mind of man was! As he looked upon them, he felt a sort of sympathy for them and wondered how they could be satisfied with life. The reason of this seemed to be answered by the Silent Voice - "They know no better, they are like the horse, they eat, they labor for their food and since they know no more they are satisfied.

Like the sheep in the field and the beast and everything that has a routine forced upon them." The Voice said again to him "Never get into a groove of life you cannot or are not big enough to get out of. Never form a daily habit. Let every day bring its own habit and you will fit in anywhere, no matter where it may be or whom you may meet - whether it be a man cleaning the street-crossing or a man in a position of what the world calls big, you will realize as you travel and meet people that it is neither the cloak nor the position that makes the man; but the Soul-mind that dwells within the body of the man. Look around your father's office and at his employees - has anyone of them a higher position than the other? No, for if there was nothing for them to do, they would all become equal - all men out of employment. There is no distinction only in the eyes of men of the material world."

He was sitting quietly alone and hearing these things. His father entered and, in his hand, held a piece of paper. He handed it to his son to read and this is what he saw, 'Business for sale. Price to suit anyone who would see the possibility. Apply to So and So for information.'

The son read it and said to his father, "I am more than pleased with your decision. I hope it will do as much for you as your decision did for me eleven years ago."

The father replies, "I know now that was the greatest work I have done in my life. Without that day, my life would have been a failure. Son, I am proud of you - not for what you have done for me; but for what you are and for what you are going to be. You have surely lifted the mist from my life. I feel as if I had been born again."

The son said, "If you feel that way, my life is worthwhile already; but I see a path ahead and there seems to be no end to it. The further I can see the more beautiful picture for it is a life with a Light ahead and that Light is so wonderful you who have gotten the first glimpse of it can never get away from the longing and rushing that you could travel faster and faster so we can see more of the meaning of this wonderful Light. Life, you know, is one never-ending journey through time; and time has no end.

The wisdom you can find in time is limitless as time. Man never stops, he must go on and once he sees and understands this Truth, he takes interest in walking the Path. Dad, I hope as you live on in the future you may see life in its True Light, and gain by the living of this life. You will be assured there is no limit to the height that can be reached by man. Maybe you will think I am trying to exalt myself before you, and I being so young; but, no, as the Silent Voice speaks so do I. I feel, many times, when I am alone, I know so little. How small I am! Yes, I realize I have to take these steps with care. I know enough to leave it to the Silent Voice of the Soul-mind. I know as my material brain matures so will the Soul-mind speak bigger thoughts, give me more beautiful pictures, make the mysteries of life clearer to me and put me on the mountain of knowledge. I will be satisfied to want and see these things revealed unto me as they want to reveal themselves."

"Son, you speak so wonderful, so deep that I am afraid you are far above your father. It makes me wonder what I have been doing to have lived so long and know so little."

"Well, dad, we are not all born with an advanced Soul-mind. You know, it is not really your fault; but since you see the truth, from now on if you fail to advance, it will be you. Yes, only you. I would say, 'Hold on to that which I have given you; but go after more in your own way. Do not let anyone carry you through. Go through of yourself '."

"Son, if it be possible, I will do as you say. It is twelve o'clock? Can it be that the morning has gone so quickly; and I have not done a thing, yet I know I have accomplished more in life this morning than all the rest of my life. Let us go home for lunch."

They arrive home. What a home of smiles and sunshine!

Lunch is served; but not much said. The young man seems to sit quietly, and as they are all expecting him to talk they too have nothing to say.

The father asked the son if he wants to go back to the office and he says, "No, I would rather stay at home."

The smile of the mother when he said this told him more than words could tell.

After his father left, his mother put her arms around him and said, "I am so pleased. I wanted you home with me alone for awhile. Miss So and So is going out to look after some business this afternoon."

When they are left alone, she goes to him and kisses him, as a proud mother should. With tears of gladness in her eyes, she tells him of her love for him and what he means to her and how she longed to go with him on his travels; but she feels his father needs her and he had someone with him who loved him too only not a mother's love.

He smiled upon his mother, put his arms around her and showered her with kisses. Yes, the kisses a manly boy would give to such a mother. He says to her, "I feel as though I have to give vent to the joy within so I will play you a tune upon my violin, the instrument that vibrates from the Soul."

He takes his violin and what sweet strains poured forth from it! It carried him away into the realms of such happiness that the mother as she sat and listened could not stop her tears from flowing. He stood there seeing nothing, hearing nothing only conscious of the strains that seemed to come from the very Soul. What a picture for a mother to look upon! As she was drinking, yes, drinking in these sweet strains of music, she seemed to open her eyes wider, and as she looked at her boy, a light seemed to formulate around him and; he burst forth in song:

Mother Mine, yes, Mother Mine
I love you, yes, I do;
And as the days go by, I know
My love for you will never die.

Love like this must travel on
yes, to the end of time
For our love is in a Circle
So it cannot have an end.

Yes, a mother's love is greater
That all other loves combined.
We may have a love for others;
But it is a love of a different kind.

As he finished his song and looked at his mother and said, es, I love you, Mother Dear. As I travel on my path to Wisdom, I will promise I will reach a place where no man can take my place. I hope you may live to see the day; but if you don't I know you will be proud of me even on the other side for, Mother Dear, this is just the road to a life ahead."

"I know it now, Son, since you have let me see the Light. What a Truth! What a clear Vision of a life worthwhile!"

"Yes, Mother, you are of the Light, but the fogs of life had obscured your vision. Yet only partially as my life shows clearly that you were of the Light in the Life before this one and it was the faint memory of that life that gave you the power of penetration to see the Soul-mind within me as you did when I was but a little 'Rose Bud of Humanity'. I owe everything I may do, everything I may know and every picture of life I may see in its Natural Truth to you. I cannot nor will I ever claim any of the things I do to be my own, for I get everything I have from you. You were the beginning of this life for me and you will be even unto the end, My Mother."

"Son, you make me feel as if I have not lived in vain after all. Ofttimes, I have looked at myself and asked the question of myself, 'What am I? Am I worthy of such a Son? Who should I thank for such a gift?"

"Mother, sometime, I will show you it was not a gift. You were in the right place at the right time so here I am." He smiles but his mother did not understand.

"Son, you are too deep for me."

Just then his friend came in and mother and son were alone no more that day. But, what a feeling! Yes, a new understanding, a closer tie than ever before. Soon she would have to let him go for how long she did not know; but she was satisfied that her son was a man and would be taken care of by the woman who had brought him through life so far.

The rest of the week was spent by talking of their travels. They urged the parents to take at least three weeks or a month and go with them the first part of their journey. It was a fourteen day sail on the ocean and a three day trip back home on the train. They were assured it would be a pleasant trip. At last they consented, and the day came for their departure.

A mother's love, a mother's pride,
A joy to live with such a life
As this son - a Soul-mind pure -
A Wisdom vast, a life supreme,
A life so real, yes, not a dream.
