Chapter18

Seeking A New Life

A man of Wisdom feels sometimes -
That he must be alone;
Yet not alone for he knows
'Tis the Silent Voice that calls.

"I want to return to the hotel," he says, "to be away from the masses. I want to sit in silent thanks for the things I have seen and heard tonight." So they wended their way back, neither speaking a word, he full of what he had received, she full of what she heard.

They reached the hotel, she said, "Do you want to be alone?"

"Yes, I would rather, if you think you would not be lonesome."

"Me, lonesome, after the things you have told me today? No, I have lots of work to do; so I, too, will be alone - yet not alone, for have I not your thoughts with me?"

So they say 'Good Night'.

Next morning, as they sit at breakfast, they had a surprise awaiting them. They were talking of a house they would have to have so they could be more quiet and not have to mingle with the crowd. The newborn friend of the ship came towards them, after greetings such as you would expect, he said to them, "Are you ready to go house hunting? I have my car and as this is my business, I shall take you around the city to see if we can get a place suitable for you."

They start, he at the wheel. He took them from house to house; but not one suited them. They were either too large or too small; so after a day of sight-seeing which was supposed to be house hunting, he pulled up before a nice home and said, "This is where my parents live. I want you to meet them. They already know you as you are all I have talked about since I came home."

As they entered, they were received with such warm welcome that they did not feel as if they were meeting strangers. They were told by the parents what they meant to them for bringing their son back to life again; and said he was wonderful before his great trouble came but he looks even different now and the difference is for the better. How pleased they were! Words could never tell what they thought of the young man who had been the means of bringing their son back to them. What it meant, only a mother can know.

The night was spent pleasantly; then the mother says, "Why can you not stay until tomorrow; and it being Sunday, we could all go to church and give thanks to God for the return of our son."

At this her son speaks up and says, "No, mother, I will not go to church. I have already given thanks unto my Creator." He says in tones of earnestness, "I tried the broken cistern; but, ah, the waters failed - Even as I stooped to drink they fled and mocked me as I wailed. I have found a Truth to satisfy, a Truth that leads us on to a fountain of Wisdom, Power and Love, yes for all mankind. Mother, the Truth of Life has been revealed unto me and by that Truth will I live."

The parents then said, "Son, we do not understand - do you mean to tell us that you have found something bigger and nobler than the life they teach us in the church?

"Yes, Mother, they teach us to take all our troubles and lay them at someone else's feet. This truth tells us we should be men and fight our own battles in life, and know the true meaning of life and death. Mother, you know how we all prayed and you know what for; but if I had understood the Truth then as I see it now, how different it would have been - the parting I mean. But let us not live over the scenes of the past, when they are not pleasant to look upon. In the future, I will talk only of the great things she did, the love she had and the love I had for her. I will tell of the happy times we had, but will not talk of the things that were sad. Yes, I see it all now. If you could have heard this Man of Mystery as he put me before the mirror of manhood, and bade me look upon myself, you would say he had no mercy; but it was all mercy. He surely did show me, in my then state of smallness, what a man he must be. Mother, I hope some day you may have the privilege to meet this man. This young man is also a Master-mind, and he, too, can tell us of the great Truth. These men speak truth at all times; and they do not care how hard they hit you. I can see now why they speak freely, they know what they say and what they say leaves no room for a comeback. Is that not so?"

"We speak without a thought of argument for we speak only when we have something to say; but you flow on into a talk and give the credit where it is not due. At least you also ought to have some of the credit - for did not the Master-mind say, 'I sowed the seed and it fell on fertile soil?' Who had the fertile soil? So you see, it took him to tell you, you to be big enough to listen and understand. So you, too, deserve credit for the fact that when he went to the trouble to sow the seed you listened to it and understood your picture."

"But where does your smile come in, the smile that brought me to the knowledge of the truth, the smile that was the means of my being born again?"

The night was spent pleasantly; but they left for the hotel once more.

The next morning, the man of Real Estate was there to see them again, to have another day of house hunting. He took them from one section of the city to another; but this being Sunday, it was more of a sightseeing trip than a business proposition. They all enjoyed the day; and the young Master-mind got enough food for thought. They returned for dinner and then spent the evening together. The longer they were together, the two single paths that led into one were being brought into view of the young man. He smiled upon his friend, as he always called her, and conveyed the message to her to go slow, he needed her yet for awhile.

As they drifted into the higher thoughts of life, the lady said, "You know, before I met my Master here, I thought I lived and knew how to live; but as I watched him grow up and saw the change come over him, it seemed every three months I used to wonder what he would become. I did not have to teach him, he was wonderfully bright. I was always afraid I would not be able to answer the questions he might put to me, but he saved me even that. After I had had him under my care for only one year, he said, "Well, there are some things I do not yet understand; but I will wait. Do you not think that would be better than always asking you questions?' At that time, it seemed to me a strange way to bring a child up; but I am convinced that a child should be brought up as he was, if the parents know as his mother knew that their son was an advanced mind. When they told me of this advanced mind, I did not understand nor did I think it possible, but now I know for it has proven itself to me beyond doubt.

When he was twelve, he became my teacher. You see how things were reversed; and he surely has taught me how to live and how to see life in its reality. I, too, just as you, have been born again. What a mysterious saying to the ordinary mind; but what a revelation to a mind that has been shown by actual facts! What a life, what a mission, what a Trust, how proud I am of myself!" As she said these words, she turned to each and said, "Yes, the Circle of Creation is wonderful; and no one feels it more than I."

The young Master then takes up the conversation, "Yes, the Circle of Creation is wonderful; and as you sit in Silence and see the Circle of all things of the Earth and the people, seemingly, trying to break this Circle, if it were made by man, I would have a fear for its continuation; but since it is of the Creator and meant for all things, including His Supreme Creation, man, I have no fear of its being broken. It may seem so in some of the lives we live; but as sure as a Circle is round so does the Circle come together again at the end as it was seen at the beginning. You know, there is not one thing upon the Earth that has not a Circle. When we were taken to the hold of the ship, I was interested in the machinery; but the electric plant was the most interesting, as this substance cannot be seen.

As I watched the great engine working to collect this something, the Voice spoke to me and said, 'Some day you will fathom the principle power of the great unseen power - for it, too, must have a Circle. You can run the engine as fast as you want to; but as long as the Circle is broken there will be no accumulation of power - you must create a path for it to travel before it will accumulate; and that path must be in a Circle from the Earth to the Dynamo - then through this path, no matter how far or how short the distance may be, it must have a ground or connection with the Earth again.' This power seems to be the greatest mystery to the world today; but some day I will tell its principle to the world for I must not leave a mystery on the Earth unsolved. I know, I will for the Voice says, 'Seek Wisdom and all things shall be revealed unto thee.' How often these words are spoken to me by the Silent Voice of the Soul-mind! So often that I know it is true. As my days advance, I see more clearly, the things that were yesterday a mystery."

"You speak well on every subject. Surely, you have a Master-mind; and by the time you are grown into manhood, I can see what a limitless mind you will have. As I speak these words, I can almost imagine I can see the man of mystery as he used these words for the first time. When he said it, you felt he was speaking truth; but it was then, to me, mysterious. Now I can see it as plain as I see you sitting there. What an incentive to live! What a goal to aspire to reach! What a path to travel; but since I have seen its truth, I am fully made up that if anyone can get there, I will."

"Yes, but you do not know," said the lady, "what you have taken upon yourself, what a fight you have begun, what a road you have to travel on; for as sure as you talk of this Truth, the people who were your friends in the past will turn away from you. They will say many things about you, and some will become afraid of you. You will be a man alone in the community in which you live. The people of the church will turn their backs upon you and may even say that you are a LOST SOUL. Yes, you will talk, you will not be able to hold your tongue; and the things you will say will cut deep. The truth does cut; if by telling it to the people, it is going to hurt the livelihood of some of them. You have a man's task before you. I would say 'Go careful, do not waste your seed where it will not take root. Do not give until the people want it and ask for it. Better be silent than waste words of Wisdom on those who could not or would not want to understand.' Did you notice how the mysterious man went about the ship and never entered into a conversation with anyone; but ourselves? You will have to take a lesson from him and say, as he says, 'I am easily approached; but I never approach - unless it is positively necessary.' What a lesson! No, not a lesson, but an Ideal."

The night sped on as if on wings; and when they looked at their clock, it said 1:30.

The newborn man said, "I have spent many nights with people who seemed, at that time, to be interesting; but as I listen to you, I realize it was so much time wasted. I will be here in the morning to see if we can find a house for you. Good-by."

Again, next morning, they meet and go on their tour of house hunting. He took them to a different part of the city; and drove out into what seemed both country and city. As they drove around, looking at the houses for rent, he took them past a particular house and drove slowly. They saw a sign for rent, they both spoke at once - what a lovely home! You would wonder who would like to rent such a beautiful house. But wait a moment, let us look at it. It may be too expensive, but we can look at it."

So they get out of the car, and as they neared the house, how beautiful everything was. The flowers were in the height of their beauty, the roses clung to the house, and there were flowers everywhere. The lawn was kept in perfect condition. As they approached each of them expressed the wish that if the owner did not want too much rent and they could have it, they knew it would just suit them.

The lady expressed herself thus: "I feel as though it were mine already."

One of the party smiled within himself; but did not let his smile be seen. They could not get into the house to see it, but they would not look at any other until they saw and knew everything about the beautiful home. So he said, "Well, if you would like to see through this house, we will go back to the city. I will investigate who the owner is and what the conditions are; and call for you this afternoon. We will look it over both inside and out. I will do my best for you."

Will he? We will see - just what we will see.

He took them back to the hotel and said he would come again as soon as he found out all he wanted about the house. He went back to the home and soon had everything that would give the secret away removed into one room. How happy he was! Here was an opportunity to repay the young man and his new found love for the new life they had given him. When he went back for them, they were waiting in real anticipation to know what he might be able to do for them. He told them they better see the inside of the house before they decided what they should do.

They arrived at the home, yes, a home indeed. As they entered, they each seemed to feel the same feeling for they both spoke at the same time, no matter what the rent was they would take it for they felt as if it just fit them. It was so quiet, so far away from anyone, so beautiful, so home like, what a find!

Then he told them the conditions: The owner had no use for it at the present time; but he reserved one room for himself so he may visit his home anytime he felt he wanted to. Since he still wanted this room, he was satisfied if he could get the right tenant, he would let them have it for the price of the taxes - which would amount to not more than 240 dollars per year. It was not rent, it was really letting someone live in it, who would appreciate it and value it and keep it as it should be. The owner would send a man twice a week to keep the lawn and flower beds in perfect condition. The owner would pay the cost. What did they think?

"What can we think, but how lucky we are that we have you to drive us around and find us this place? We will never be able to thank you enough."

"Do not say that, there is nothing I could do big enough to repay you for the new life you have given me, and you know there is a great amount of selfishness in this. I am serving you, that you may ask me to see you sometimes when you two are not busy."

"We shall want a car and a chauffeur, as we intend to stay here for a few years. We can make this our home, and travel all we want to in the meantime. What a beautiful home! When can we take possession?"

"Just as soon as you want to, tonight or tomorrow, that can be arranged to suit you."

"Well, we will say tomorrow; then we can bring father and mother to see it before they leave for home. They are leaving the day after tomorrow, so we can have a family party the night before they leave."

"Where do I come in?" said the newborn man.

"Oh, well, you are one of the family of Truth; and since this is a family of Truth, you can count yourself as one of us."

As he said this, he looked at his friend and she caught his smile and its meaning and said nothing.

They went back to the city to arrange things for the removal to their home the next day.

That night he went to his home alone. Alone? - No, for the Silent Voice was with him and he felt the new life almost more than he could bear. For the first time, he felt words coming as they had never come before. He began to express himself thus: "Can it be possible for so much happiness to fill his life; when in this very house he had lost his loved one, and cursed his God for taking her from him. Yet he had such a feeling of joy to see this stranger take possession of the same house and feel it a pleasure to have them. Was he true to the one he had lost?"

Thus, he talked to himself, until the Voice said to him again, "Yes, she is proud of thee, even more proud than she was in life for she sees her Soul-mind being brought back to her home and manhood once more." As these thoughts came to him, he felt a tired feeling come over him. He lay down to sleep. As he slept, he dreamed he saw his loved one come to him and as she did, she touched him on his brow and said, 'Yes I love thee and I still love thee, and will always wait for thee; but there is someone else worthy of thee. Love her, care for her and she will make you happy - Thy happiness means my happiness; so love her for she will not break the Circle. She has a Circle of her own.' " As he awoke out of this dream, he saw his wife standing there beside him with a smile of contentment upon her face.

Was it a dream or visitation of his wife in the Soul-mind? I will leave you, my reader, to be the judge; but no one could tell him it was not true.

Afterward he fell asleep, and what a sleep!

The next day was a busy one. Then night saw them all together again, the father, the mother, the son, his friend and our newborn man.

New Life comes to the few:
Yet it is there for the many -
If we listen to Truth as told by the Man of Wisdom
He listened, he knew, he saw and understood.
